科技英語翻譯 被動語態(tài)及長句的翻譯

1. 被動語態(tài)的翻譯

被動語態(tài)的廣泛使用是科技英語中的一大突出特點，漢語雖然也有被動句，但使用范圍狹窄得多，翻譯英語被動語態(tài)時，既可以譯成漢語的被動句，也可以譯成漢語的主動句，而且譯法靈活多樣。

1.1 譯成漢語被動句

將原文句子的主語仍然譯作主語，在謂語前加“被”或省略“被”；也可在行為主體前

加“被”、“由”、“受”、“為”、“所”等；還可以譯成“是……的”結(jié)構(gòu)。

The first stage of a rocket is thrown away only minutes after the rocket takes off. 火箭的第一級在火箭起飛后僅僅幾分鐘就被扔掉。

The volume of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure if the temperature is held constant.

By using this new process the loss of metal was reduced to 20 percent．
采用這一新工藝使金屬耗損降低為原來的20%。

Care should be taken at all times to protect the instrument from dust and damp．

應當始終注意保護儀器，使其不沾染灰塵，不受潮。

如果溫度保持恒定，氣體的體積與壓力成反比。

The moon，as well as the stars and the sun，is made use of by the mariner to find his latitude and longitude at sea.

月球和星星、太陽一樣常被海員用來確定在海上的經(jīng)緯度。

1.2 譯成漢語主動句

(1) 譯成有主語的主動句。

翻譯時，更換原文的主語或增加泛指性的主語。

A right kind of fuel is needed for an atomic reactor.

原子反應堆需要一種適宜的燃料。

To explore the moon’s surface，rockets were launched again and again.

為了探測月球的表面，人們一次又一次地發(fā)射火箭。

(2) 譯成無主句。

翻譯時，把原文的主語譯成動詞的賓語，有時還可以把原文的主語并入謂語一起譯。

When work is done against friction，heat is produced．

當克服摩擦而做功時，就產(chǎn)生熱。

2. 長句的翻譯

前面我們曾經(jīng)說過，大量使用長難句是英語科技文章的一個特點。要正確地理解和翻譯英語科技文章的長句，必須首先分析理解原文的句法結(jié)構(gòu)，找出整個句子的中心內(nèi)容及其各層意思，分析幾層意思之間的邏輯關(guān)系，然后再根據(jù)漢語的習慣正確地翻譯原文。對于英語科技文章的長難句一般采用順譯、倒譯、分譯、綜合四種翻譯方法。

2.1 順譯

當英語長句的句法結(jié)構(gòu)、時間順序、邏輯關(guān)系符合漢語習慣時，可采用順譯的方法。

In the course of designing a structure，you have to take into consideration what kind of load the above mentioned structure will be subjected，where on the structure the said load will do what is expected and whether the load on the structure is put into position all of a sudden or applied by degree．

分析：該句為主從復合句，what kind of．．．subjected，where．．．expected和whether．．．degree是動詞take的三個賓語從句。此句的語法結(jié)構(gòu)與邏輯關(guān)系基本與漢語相同，可按原文順序翻譯。

譯文：在設(shè)計一個結(jié)構(gòu)物時，必須考慮到：結(jié)構(gòu)物將承受什么樣的荷載，荷載將在結(jié)構(gòu)物的什么地方起作用，以及這荷載是突然施加的，還是逐漸施加的。

The cables bear on specially constructed saddles on the towers，which are shaped to accommodate them，the saddles being either fixed so that the cables may slide over them，or mounted on rollers

2.2 倒譯

當英語長句的句法結(jié)構(gòu)、時間順序、邏輯關(guān)系與漢語習慣相反時，可采用倒譯的方法。

This is why the hot water system in a furnace will operate without the use of a water pump，if the pipes are arranged so that the hottest water rises while the coldest water runs down again to the furnace．

分析：這是一個主從復合句。why引導表語從句，在從句中還有一個if引導的條件從句，該條件從句是the hot water．．．a(chǎn) water pump的條件狀語。在條件從句中so that又引導結(jié)果狀語從句。此句應采用倒譯的方法即按漢語的表達習慣將條件狀語放在前面。

譯文：如果管子的安裝能使最熱的水上升，而最冷的水流下來后再返回鍋爐里去，那么，鍋爐中的熱水系統(tǒng)不用水泵就能循環(huán)，道理就在此。

The bending moments，shear and axial forces，and deflections of reinforced concrete frames at any stage of loading from zero to ultimate load can be determined analytically using the conditions of static equilibrium and geometric compatibility，if the moment-curvature relationships of the sections are known．

分析：這是一個主從復合句。if引導條件從句，主句較長，主句的主語為the bending moments．．．from zero to ultimate load，在主句中using．．．geometric compatibility為狀語，修飾主句動詞can be determined。該句應采用倒譯的方法按漢語的表達習慣將條件狀語放在前面翻譯。

譯文：如果截面的彎矩——曲率關(guān)系已知，鋼筋混凝土框架從零到極限荷載間任一加載階段的彎矩、剪力、軸向力和撓度，均可以通過靜力平衡與幾何相容兩個條件應用解析方法來確定。
